Si svegliano insieme alle prime luci dell’alba, Jude gli si è raggomitolato affianco durante la notte, lui ha un braccio intorno alle sue spalle, sono entrambi coperti dai loro due giubbini di pelle; quando apre gli occhi cerca il suo sguardo, e quando lo trova gli sorride assonnato, parla e nella sua voce gli pare di sentire qualcosa di sacro.

“Ducky, it’s dawn… What have we done?”

“Don’t steal my line, I don’t know what to say now.”

“You’re in trouble?”

“I guess so.”

“Have a plain?”

“Don’t know, I’m gonna pretend I really slept on the beach, or outside in the garden.”

“In the same place where you were when you called me?”

“What a difference a day makes…”

“She’s gonna believe you?”

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

“Mr. Gable, I’m afraid you have my own smell on you, not your garden one.”

“That’s because I’m in love just with yours.”

Silenzio. Sotto di loro la città si sta cominciando a svegliare, se mai è riuscita ad andare a dormire; in lontananza, sulla Pacific Coast Highway, si cominciano ad intravedere i primi movimenti, i primi di un’altra lunga, faticosa giornata. Il tempo è bello, è quasi sempre bello a Los Angeles. È Pasqua, andranno tutti in spiaggia oggi.

“You knew today was my birthday?”

“Sure I did! You didn’t seriously think I was flying here just because of Easter, did you?

“I don’t remember I told you about it.”

“You didn’t, I’ve found out by myself.”

“My Watson is learning from his Holmes…”

“I’m gonna show you how much clever he can be… When are we gonna start shooting the sequel?”

“You know what? I was just thinking about calling Guy later on this morning and ask it to him. But it’s my birthday, so maybe he’ll be the one who’ll make the call.”

“You also read my mind now?”

“Yes I do.”

“So, what I am thinking about right now?”
