Dipinse il mio volto su una tela candida. Solo il mio volto. E mio padre quasi bruciò quel quadro. Era terrificante, lo rammento ancora e lo rammenterò per sempre ne sono certa. Il mio viso era pallido, i miei capelli spenti e privi della consueta lucentezza e cura che Natalia con zelo offriva loro ogni mattina. Parevo un cadavere. I miei occhi, però, i miei occhi erano vivi, animati. Erano spalancati, attenti, arguti. Erano profondi.
Per la prima volta in tutta la mia vita mi ero specchiata in una superficie veritiera. Nascosi il quadro nelle mie sale, sfuggendo all’ira di mio padre, e lì lo conservai per sempre.

« Perché vuoi mettere fine alla nostra guerra? Mi stavo divertendo,» aggiunse per carpire quel segreto che non riusciva a comprendere. Perché mai Klaus, l’orgoglioso e invincibile ibrido Originale, avrebbe dovuto fare un passo indietro quando era certo della propria totale supremazia?
« Per tuo fratello,» gli rivelò e Damon frenò bruscamente. Dietro di sé non v’era nessuno ed era arrivato nei pressi della pensione. Suo fratello. Stefan. Quella mattina gli era sembrato perfettamente in sé. Certo, per come potesse essere in sé Stefan Salvatore, ex Squartatore non ancora redento. Per quello che ne sapeva lui, in quell’ora che aveva trascorso ad ubriacarsi al Grill, Stefan avrebbe anche potuto aver dato fuoco alla casa. Però sembrava essere d’accordo con lui, aveva persino contrastato Elena e le sue manie di compassione. Si disse che non doveva arrivare a conclusioni affrettate. Stefan non li avrebbe mai traditi. Non avrebbe mai voltato le spalle a lui, non dopo tutto ciò che aveva fatto per riportarlo sulla retta via.
